Improving Life Cycle

Navy Deck Drains manufactured in accordance with NAVSEA Dwg# 803-1385789 have traditionally been cast in bronze material. Our Navy’s strong interest in Life Cycle extension has created a demand for Deck Drains in alloys with higher resistance to salt water corrosion.
For years, Bestweld has been the preferred supplier for wrought CuNi (90/10 and 70/30) and CRES (304L and 316L) Deck Drains. The majority of U.S. Navy new construction shipbuilding programs install wrought copper-nickel and stainless steel drains, this includes DDG, LPD17, CVN, and TAKE programs.
Porosity and tramp elements are inherent to cast deck drains. Consequently, shipbuilders struggled with cracking problems during installation for years. Heat from the welding caused porosity as a result drains needed weld repair of cracked bodies and removal and/or replacement of faulty drains leading to significant lost time and money.
Bestweld’s cold-formed copper-nickel wrought deck drains can be welded directly into the deck or to a compensation ring, tri-metallic ring, or a steel ring.

Casting vs Cold Formed

Cast drains are thick, heavy and bulky. Bestweld’s wrought deck drains are lighter in weight in turn reducing topside and overall weight.
To make the installation process even easier, Bestweld can supply all wrought deck drains with compensation rings, tri-metallic ring or steel rings already attached (welded). For added strength in normal decks, compensation rings are used. For welding to aluminum decks tri-metallic rings are used. For regular steel to steel welding steel rings are used.
Bestweld’s deck drains are manufactured with or without compensation, tri-metallic, and steel rings. Valves and seals (or traps) are available with Bestweld’s deck drains. Also, Bestweld manufactures plain outlet drains (buttwelds) or belled-end outlets for fillet welding.
Bestweld Deck Drains are shipped assembled with “debris” shields in place to protect the internals of the drain from weld splash during installation.

Drain Types and Testing

Bestweld Deck Drains are Grade “A” Shock Test qualified and Hydro Test qualified.
When you choose Bestweld’s deck drains for new construction, retrofit, repair or commercial oil platforms you will receive products of the highest quality, designed for high pressure, high temperature, and severe corrosion applications.
Bestweld makes a variety of ship’s Maritime & Navy Deck Drains (IAW 803-1385789) including Type A, B, C, D, G, and H, with compensation, tri-metallic or steel rings by request. Find out more about Bestweld’s Standard Maritime & Navy Deck Drains by following the link below:
